Bucyibaruta (ICTR-05-85)

Transferred to National Courts: 20 November 2007

Laurent Bucyibaruta, a former Prefect of Gikongoro Prefecture, was indicted for his alleged role in massacres of Tutsis across Gikongoro Prefecture. The prosecution charged Bucyibaruta with incitement to commit genocide, genocide, complicity in genocide, and crimes against humanity for acts of extermination, murder, and rape.

In 2007, an ICTR Trial Chamber accepted the prosecution’s request to transfer Bucyibaruta to France for trial in French courts.

This is one of five cases referred by the ICTR to national courts that is being monitored by the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT).
