Munyagishari (ICTR-05-89)

Transfer Decision: 3 May 2003; Appeal Decision: 6 June 2012

Bernard Munyagishari, former President of the Interahamwe militia in Gisenyi Prefecture, was indicted for allegedly recruiting, training, and leading Interahamwe militiamen in killings and rapes of Tutsis. The prosecution charged Munyagishari with direct responsibility for conspiracy to commit genocide and direct and superior responsibility for genocide, complicity in genocide, murder as a crime against humanity, and rape as a crime against humanity.

In 2012, Munyagishari was transferred to Rwandan national court to face trial.

This is one of five cases referred by the ICTR to national courts that is being monitored by the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT).
