Former Guantánamo Detainee Sentenced to Life Imprisonment in New York

Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, the first Guantánamo detainee to be tried in U.S. civilian court and who was convicted late last year on one of over 280 charges related to the 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by Judge Kaplan of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. [NYT; NYT] Earlier this month, the court denied Ghailani’s motion for a judgment of acquittal or a new trial, finding that the evidence was sufficient to support the jury’s guilty verdict and that that verdict was not inconsistent with its acquittal of Ghailani on the remaining charges.
