On Thursday, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights will hold hearings on a range of human rights topics and cases. Hearings to be held in the Padilha Vidal Room (webcast here) will address: various topics concerning Colombia (violence against women, peasant land control, labor unions, and the general human rights situation), rights to territory and self-governance of the indigenous peoples in the Amazon Region. Hearings held in the Rubén Darío Room (webcast here) will address: testimony in the Jesús Ángel Gutiérrez Olvera v. Mexico case; various topics concerning Mexico (rights of migrants, citizen security, attacks on journalists); criminal juvenile justice; and, the situation of migrants in Costa Rica, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic. The Commission will hold its final day of hearings tomorrow (Friday), when it will address the Hul’qumi’num Treaty Group v. Canada case; the situation of the judiciary in Haiti; LGBTI rights in the Americas; public protest in Chile;the Agricultural Community of Diaguita de los Huascoaltinos v. Chile case; citizen security in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras; environmental rights in El Salvador; the Maria da Penha law of Brazil; the situation of Afro-descendent women; access to public information in Panama; labor union rights in the Americas; administration of justice in Panama; and the situation of human rights defenders in Mesoamerica.
