Transferred to National Courts: 20 November 2007
Wenceslas Munyeshyaka, a Catholic priest in Kigali, was indicted for his alleged role in massacres against Tutsis in Saint Famille Parish, CELA, and Saint Paul Pastoral Center in Kigali City. The prosecution charged Munyeshyaka with direct responsibility for genocide and crimes against humanity for acts of rape, extermination, and murder. In 2007, an ICTR Trial Chamber accepted the prosecution’s request to transfer Munyeshyaka to France for trial in French courts.
This is one of five cases referred by the ICTR to national courts that is being monitored by the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT).
